Tauranga Rock ‘n’ Roll Club has been supporting Rock and Roll in the Tauranga area since 1983.
Dancers of all ages are able to do Rock and Roll and it is great family fun! No-one is too old or too young to enjoy dancing.
It is great cardiovascular exercise and dancers can dance for several hours a night, requiring a lot of stamina.
The club has more than 50 members and was conceived after local women Joyce Story and Nancy Ronald began reminiscing about growing up in the Rock and Roll era.
Inspired to bring their teenage memories to life, the pair put out a call for interest. They found it – about 70 people attended the club’s inaugural meeting.
The club members hold lessons, starting with beginners then moving to more advanced lessons as dancers become more confident.
It’s not hard to learn. Lessons teach between six and eight dance moved in six weeks and have hour-long lessons before club nights each Monday. Basically, you just need to know your left from your right.
Once people have mastered the basic steps a lot of people make up their own moves. Often you’ll get taught a move, then you’ll change it around and have a bit of fun with it. At the end of the day, it’s all about being social and having fun.
Over the year the club holds ‘hops’ that club members can attend and meet others from clubs throughout the district.
The music from the era is great to dance to, but the club includes a lot of modern music too, like Candy Man by Christina Aguilera. Country Rock is another that works well with Rock and Roll.
For those who wish to go further, there is the opportunity to train for competition dancing; however most club members are social dancers who enjoy the social side of the club.
Whether you are just visiting the club to learn Rock and Roll (which is taught by members with all monies going to the club for running costs) or you wish to become a member, we welcome you and hope that you enjoy your time with us.
